Pastor’s Postcard – Summer Cycling and the Hub of Catholic Social Teaching

Sunday July 28, 2024

I enjoy watching highlights of the Tour de France cycling stages and the Olympic velodrome racing as an inspiration for riding my bike.  There is a certain melodic flow to biking as the wheels turn with the push of the pedals and the passing of miles.  As our country gears up for the fall presidential elections, I find it an opportunity to share about Catholic Social Teaching.  The hub that holds all the principles together like the spokes of a wheel is the dignity of every human person.

The core of Catholic moral and social teaching is respect for the dignity of every human person.  As a nation, we share many blessings and strengths, including a tradition of religious freedom and political participation.  However, as a people, we face serious challenges that are both political and moral.  The Church’s obligation to participate in shaping the moral character of society is a requirement of our faith.  Therefore, it is appropriate and necessary for us to bring the essential truth about human life and dignity to the public square.  This weekend and later in the months of August through October, we will feature excerpts from Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship

In Christ,
