Holy Families

Do you have mixed memories of your family, fond impressions and sore recollections? The messiness of families and the endearing idiosyncrasies of its members counteract my idealism.  Even Mary was worried when she did not know where her son was.  May every parent be so relieved as to find them in church!

Mary is a parent who remembers.  Scripture this weekend speaks of her keeping the events of Jesus’ childhood in her heart (she whose heart would be pierced by sorrow), pondering and reflecting.  The attitude we have toward our memories is important.  Resentment can warp our hearts when we give ourselves over to recalling a memory to feel the same painful emotions over and over again.  We need to give our memories over to God.

The healing of our hearts and memories can alleviate resentment and allow gratitude and joy to emerge.  Ponder with your heart, sit and reflect, pray with an image of the Holy Family and find the healing and wholeness we long for.

In Christ,

Rev. Robert P. Capone
