Happy Mother’s Day and the Marian Month of May
Our dear mothers are fond of pondering and sharing the growth, milestones, characteristics and activities of their children, in and from their hearts, as Mary did (Luke 2:19, 51). My sincerest gratitude to our mothers who this month have given us as a community so much to ponder and celebrate: the Confirmation of our youth today and First Holy Communions last weekend and next. Our dear mothers not only nurture us with tenderness but also guide the development of our faith. Motherhood is beautiful, and we contemplate this in Mary who so enriches Christianity.
Mothers and fathers are co-creators with God in each human life. Laudate Si, the letter by Pope Francis on our Common Home (the environment) not only expresses the interconnection of all things, but recognizes Mary as the Queen of Creation. As life abounds outdoors and in our Church this month, we ponder his words:
“Mary, the Mother who cared for Jesus, now cares with maternal affection and pain for this wounded world. Just as her pierced heart mourned the death of Jesus, so now she grieves for the sufferings of the crucified poor and for the creatures of this world laid waste by human power. Completely transfigured, she now lives with Jesus, and all creatures sing of her fairness. She is the Woman, ‘clothed in the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars’ (Revelation 12:1). Carried up into heaven, she is the Mother and Queen of all creation. In her glorified body, together with the Risen Christ, part of creation has reached the fullness of its beauty… Hence, we can ask her to enable us to look at this world with eyes of wisdom (#241).”
In Christ,
